Will This Proposal Pass?
A DAO vote passes on two tests, not one: more For than Against, and enough votes to make quorum. What counts toward quorum differs. On Uniswap and Compound only For votes do; on ENS and Arbitrum, For and Abstain; on Snapshot, every vote, Against included. Type in a vote in progress to see where it stands and how many tokens would swing it.
Will this proposal pass?
Type in the vote so far. Each DAO counts it its own way: whether Abstain counts toward quorum, whether For has to clear a margin, what a tie does.
Fails
The two tests, contract by contract
| Contract | Majority | Quorum counts | A tie |
|---|---|---|---|
| Governor Bravo (Uniswap) | For more than Against | For only: 40,000,000 UNI | Fails |
| Compound Governor | For more than Against | For only: 400,000 COMP | Fails |
| OpenZeppelin Governor (ENS, Arbitrum) | For more than Against | For plus Abstain | Fails |
| Aave Governance v3 | For ahead of Against by more than the differential (80,000 AAVE at Level 1) | For above the yes threshold (320,000 AAVE at Level 1) | Fails |
| Lido (Aragon Voting) | Yes above 50% of the votes cast | Yes above 5% of all LDO | Fails |
| Snapshot | For more than Against | For plus Against plus Abstain | Fails |
Those are the conditions as the code applies them. Governor Bravo marks a proposal defeated when "forVotes <= againstVotes || forVotes < quorumVotes" (Uniswap's implementation). Compound Governor overrides OpenZeppelin's quorum so that it "only includes votes in favor" (CompoundGovernor.sol). OpenZeppelin's simple counting reaches quorum on "forVotes + abstainVotes" and succeeds when "forVotes > againstVotes" (GovernorCountingSimple). Aave needs "forVotes > yesThreshold" and "forVotes - againstVotes > yesNoDifferential" (GovernanceCore.sol). Lido's Aragon Voting wants each share to be strictly above its percentage (Voting.sol). Snapshot says a proposal passes "if it has more For votes than Against votes, and the total of For plus Abstain plus Against votes reaches or exceeds the quorum" (Snapshot FAQ).
Three things the rules do that surprise people
Abstain can carry a vote on ENS and Arbitrum, and does nothing on Uniswap. Take 600,000 ENS For, 100,000 Against and 400,000 Abstain: For plus Abstain is 1,000,000, the quorum, so it passes. The same split on Uniswap's scale, 30 million For, 5 million Against and 20 million Abstain, fails, because only the 30 million For count toward its 40 million.
On Snapshot, voting Against can push a proposal over quorum. Every vote counts toward a Snapshot quorum. With a quorum of 10 million, a vote standing at 6 million For and 3 million Against has not passed; another million Against takes the total to 10 million while For still leads, and it passes. Whether to abstain from a vote you oppose is a real tactic there.
Aave's margin is not a majority. At Level 1, 400,000 For against 320,000 Against fails: For leads by exactly 80,000, and the rule wants more than 80,000. One more AAVE For and it passes.
How many tokens swing a vote
The calculator works out the fewest whole tokens that change the result: For votes that would carry a failing proposal, Against votes that would sink a passing one, and Abstain votes that would carry it over quorum where Abstain counts. Type your own voting power in to see whether it alone would do either. In practice the denominator is turnout, not supply, which is why one large holder can decide a vote: how whales swing DAO votes has the cases, and how DAO votes are weighted where the weight comes from.
Remember the clock as well as the count. Compound's and Arbitrum's governors extend voting by 2 days when quorum is reached late (a 14,400-block vote extension, read from each contract), so a last-minute push to quorum gives the other side time to answer. Each DAO's periods and quorums are in the DAO voting rules, along with whether a vote, once cast, can be changed.

Votes are entered by you from the DAO's own page; the calculator fetches nothing. A Snapshot space can add rules of its own; check the proposal's settings.
